The Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA) is excited to join NACE as a Diamond member. We look forward to attending the annual conference in April and hosting a webinar for you soon.
ISA, recognized by the Secretary of U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Qualified State Soybean Board, is a statewide organization that serves Indiana soybean farmers through checkoff, membership and policy programs. Indiana’s soybean checkoff supports research, promotion and educational programs to increase demand, expand markets and find new uses for soybeans.
In 2009, ISA achieved a breakthrough to increase demand for soybeans. Asphalt rejuvenation available at half the price

New Bio-Based DIY Application Saves Roads and Money Two Ways

It has been tested and proven that using a sustainable, soy-based asphalt rejuvenator such as BIORESTOR can save your county considerable money by extending pavement life and reducing the amount of patching and repair. With large budget cuts happening and dollars having to be stretched farther, there is no better time to invest in a DIY rejuvenation program.

The savings will continue; purchase of the spray system can pay for itself in just 4 miles of road way treated. This translates into saving as much as half the cost of a typical contractor applied rejuvenation sealing. Results published in the Spring 2019 issue of Asphalt Technology News placed BIORESTOR-­­ as the highest ranking rejuvenating fog sealant against six other products in their test study2.

In an article originally appearing in the Spring 2020 edition of Crossroads magazine3, Cass County Road Commission (CCRC) in Michigan, began using BIORESTOR in 2015, and has applied the treatment every year since.

“We’d been experimenting and looking at other treatment alternatives,” Joe Bellina, PE, CCRC chief engineer, said. “The standards are thin overlays, asphalt overlays and chip seals. We wanted to see if there were any other marketable items that would suit our purposes and give us additional longevity in our pavement life. At the same time, we wanted it to be cost-effective and friendlier to the motoring public.”

At two-thirds the cost of standard chip seal, the soybean-based rejuvenator, BIORESTOR, was a winning solution. CCRC has already seen a reduction in cracking and raveling on the surface layer of asphalt.

“So far the product has done exactly what we hoped it would do,” Bellina said. CCRC performed a series of water infiltration tests to make sure BIORESTOR was keeping the pavement sealed and blocking water from getting in.

Bellina noted that in the first year of application, CCRC didn’t see the kind of cracking they’d find in a normal surface roadway. “The cracking was far less prevalent and less water was coming back through from the underlying pavement,” he said.

Compared to traditional sealants, the pavement rejuvenator has also performed well in terms of visual appeal.

“This road treatment is a clear substance, so it doesn’t affect the appearance of the roadway,” Bellina said. “It keeps the pavement a little darker than the normal oxidation process as viewed by the traveling public, but unlike seal coat or chip seal, there isn’t a visible difference. I think so far it’s a little more friendly to the traveling public than some of the standard procedures.”

The Jackson County Department of Transportation (JCDOT) is also testing out the product; after extensive research, they began their first project in fall 2019. Like CCRC, JCDOT was looking for alternatives to the traditional chip seal. JCDOT’s goal is to treat 35-40 miles of road; in 2019, they completed 18.6 miles. The department has plans to continue the process this year.

“Any product we can use that can cut down the cracking and prevent water infiltration into the pavement at a reasonable cost is helpful to our roads and the public as a whole,” Bellina said. “If we can reduce water infiltration and lengthen the lifespan of the treatments we apply, that’s all for the better.”

Hartman Products, LP was founded in 2001 with an idea that would make installing endwalls/headwalls at the end of your culvert pipe easy for everybody. The stormwater industry was moving more towards HDPE plastic pipe because it was lightweight and easy to install. The next steps were to get the industry to accept this new concept and approve our product's use throughout the country. The HartmanEW System for headwalls/endwalls has been installed on thousands of projects across the US as well as in Canada since 2001 and the product has been approved by 8 State DOT Agencies for use as well as multiple counties, cities, and townships. It is exceptionally durable and has survived thru major disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. The installer can simply lift the plastic stay-in-place form in to place at the end of the culvert pipe by their self (it only weighs 42lbs.), then the form is filled with any material to give it weight, including concrete, sand, stone, or just plain dirt, and then put the lid on and secure it down with stainless steel or galvanized screws. It is that easy and that quick, so try it, and you will never do it any other way!
